Jul. 8th, 2006 08:02 pmI've finally remembered how to do it. Today, I played cricket for a new team, and actually did well. Bath Pedigree have had to withdraw from the league for the rest of the season due to not getting enough players, so I've taken the opportunity to look elsewhere for my cricket and happened upon Bradley Stoke Cricket Club, and they were kind enough to let me play today. Incredibly, and unlike so much of this season, I did pretty well, up until I injured myself anyway!
My batting was good, if somewhat ring-rusty so will need to be worked on again in the nets, but my main boon of the day was the fact that my ability to bowl properly returned! For so long it was my main form of attack in cricket as I was shoved down the batting order, and my fielding wasn't amazing. Then, it too appeared to desert me at the beginning of this season as I bowled 9 overs for approximately 70-80 runs, and 0 wickets. Today however, that all changed. I came on to bowl, and my first over was the standard short pitched deliveries, but then it suddenly all came back. That was until I tried one quicker ball too many and collapsed on the floor as my calf muscle in my left leg strongly objected by yanking itself, twisting itself out of it's proper position, and only deigning to return to it's normal position after it had stopped my foot and lower leg from moving for a good 30 seconds or so. Because it was only a friendly and so as not to risk any further injury, it was suggested that I go off for at least 10 minutes and see if it got any better, and if it did then I would come back on. As it was, I just sat and watched the rest of the game in a remarkably efficient show of self-awareness with injuries. As some of you will know, I'm usually the one that goes "meh, that doesn't hurt" when there is a stick sticking through my lower leg :-)
Final figures were 4 overs 3 balls, 1 maiden (my first for over a year), 8 runs, 1 wicket. For the first time this season, I come home from a cricket match happy. Long may it continue :-)
