Mar. 1st, 2005 07:24 amLast night was truly magical. It confirmed a few things to me, and also showed me that yes, I'm a soppy bastard! I had only previously heard it on CD, and even then it wasn't the whole show, so when I actually got the e-mail from a friend in BLOG saying "I can get a bulkload of tickets for starlight express for 15 quid each, who is interested?" I rather jumped at the chance. "BLOG Members and other halves first, and then if theres enough tickets left, then friends too". Needless to say, I wasn't the only one in BLOG to jump at the chance. So, arrived at the theatre last night with
doribore and made our way to our seats. After waiting for the obligatory 3 or 4 minutes after the scheduled start time, the lights descended and the voice of control rang out through the theatre.
2 and a bit hours later, and I was sitting in my seat, wanting to watch the whole thing again. and again. and again. I already knew I liked the musical, and I thought it was my favourite, but after actually seeing it live, there is no musical in the whole world that will top it for me. I'll say this now. If I only ever get 1 lead role in my entire life, please God let it be Rusty in Starlight Express. I don't care if it only runs for 1 night. I just want to sing his songs, run his race, play that part. The whole atmosphere last night was amazing, and at two moments in the show, I was "on stage being Rusty". Ok, so I wasn't actually on stage, but it damn well felt like it. There is a section in the show that is on the CD, and it used to last me getting home from work when I lived in Swindon. When they got to that bit, it was all I could do not to stand up and sing and act along with Rusty. The guy on stage was brilliant. It was exactly how I'd envisaged it when I had just been listening to the music, and to see it actually brought to life in front of me was overwhelming. And then a few songs later came one of my favourite love-songs. It's a duet between Pearl and Rusty and is preceded by a lovely song from Pearl which (on the CD anyway) Rusty chimes in over the top from off-stage. Rusty didn't chime in last night, but the anticipation of it was there! And best of all, the person sitting next to me whilst the song was going on was Dori, and there is nothing that beats the feeling of being in a love song and holding on to the one you love. It's as though the song is made for you, and you only and everyone else in the world can just bugger off! So yeah, I was a bit teary during some moments, and bloody jealous of the guy on stage being Rusty. In all likelihood, I'll probably never get to play that role, but that sure as hell is not going to stop me from dreaming about playing it, and it's not going to stop me going for it if I ever get the chance!!
